Global Oncology Leadership Development (GOLD) Program GOLD is developing and strengthening cancer care leadership at an international level by providing Fellows with the necessary interpersonal and organizational skills to become leaders in cancer care for their local communities. Since its inception, the Program has hosted 124 Fellows from 38 countries. Below is a spotlight of some of the 2022 - 2023 Fellows: Dr. Benazir Mir Khan had to overcome several roadblocks including cultural norms about women to move from Pakistan to train at The Princess Margaret. Dr. Khan is GOLD’s first Radiation Oncologist from Pakistan and is hoping to use what she is learning in the Program to better help her female patients once she returns to Pakistan. “The program has really broadened my horizons and changed my vision,” she says. “I’m more sensitive towards patients, and people's different belief systems.” Dr. Alejandro Brañes, a Gastroenterologist from Chile, first heard about The Princess Margaret through his uncle who trained at Toronto General Hospital 30 years ago. He appreciates the specialty training he is receiving through the Program, which is different from the traditional education in Chile. “I want to take what I have learned back to Chile and lobby for a different kind of healthcare delivery.” Dr. Funmilola Wuraola, a Breast Cancer Surgeon, came to The Princess Margaret to enhance her skills and her capacity as a leader. When she returns to Nigeria, she intends to advocate for policy changes including increasing people’s awareness about breast cancer screening and treatment options. “I want to be a voice for young people when it comes to leadership in global oncology,” Dr. Wuraola says. “Thanks to this training, I can be both a doctor and an influencer.” Global Oncology Enrichment Program The Program provides a unique opportunity for trainees and junior faculty to explore key concepts in global oncology and cancer control that they may otherwise have little exposure to through their core training. Since its inception, the Program, which is hosted free-of-charge in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology and the American Association of Residents in Oncology, has seen 532 participants from 56 countries. Throughout the course, participants complete 10 one-hour webinars covering various topics of global oncology including cancer policy, advocacy for and implementation of cancer programs and the economics of cancer care. 8
